DNA tests bringing new genealogists

A great blog post on the Clue Wagon today about how the world of genealogy is changing when new genealogists start their journey with a DNA swab rather than a stack of papers – and how we should respond.

Thanks Kerry, This is a really interesting article and certainly explains the lack of trees on DNA sites such as FTDNA and Gedmatch. It really is very annoying when people haven’t got a tree for you to view.
Kerry Scott’s discovery through observing Ancestry join dates is really an eye opener and definitely identifies that there is a need to be careful when emailing a DNA match. If they are newbies, we need to make sure we educate them and assist them to keep exploring and building their tree. Far better to help them than complain about how little they have to offer to their matches.

This article probably highlights the discussion we had at last Saturday’s meeting about ways of meeting the learning needs of newbies. As a Society are we meeting the needs of those who are doing their DNA first, prior to having any understanding of the basics of genealogy?

    Food for thought!
    Regards , Barbara
